Practice

Twenty seconds,
once a day

This is the whole practice from The Instant Connection. Pick a time. When it arrives, stop for twenty seconds and say one sentence to yourself. That is all there is to it.

Try It Now

Twenty seconds

Press start, close your eyes, and breathe once. When the count ends, say it out loud or silently: I am important.

20

I am important.

Make It Daily

Put it in your calendar

The practice works because it repeats. Add it to whatever calendar you already use — it will remind you once a day at noon, and you can move it to any time that suits you.

  • Works on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows — anything with a calendar.
  • No app to install, no account, nothing to sign up for.
  • Change the time to whichever numbers mean something to you.

Once the time is set, the numbers start doing the work. When you notice them on a clock later in the day, let that be the reminder again.

Where It Comes From

A professor who listened

He had a way of listening that made me question everything I had learned before.

I learned this at nineteen, in a speech class, from a professor who mentored me — and more than that, listened to me, and taught me how to listen. Three decades later I wrote it down as a short book called The Instant Connection.

The book is free. It explains where the practice came from, why twenty seconds is enough, and what happens when you keep at it.
